Kats post sixth consecutive GPA above 2.89

Student-athletes at Sam Houston State produced an overall grade point average of 2.91 during the 2009 spring semester, the sixth consecutive semester for the Bearkats to post a department GPA above 2.89.
Five Bearkat sports teams produced squad grade point averages of 3.10 or higher. The top team was volleyball with a 3.36 GPA followed by soccer 3.31, tennis 3.22, women's golf 3.19 and softball 3.10.
The 2.91 department grade point average marks the 25th consecutive semester for the Bearkats to post an overall GPA above 2.5 and the 34th semester in a row above a 2.3 average (every year since the 1992-93 sports season).
A total of 24 student-athletes earned perfect 4.00 GPAs during the 2009 spring semester. Four of those students – Jenny Pence and Katie Wesneski (soccer), Dustin Joubert (cross country/track) and Sarah St. John (women's golf) – own perfect 4.00 overall GPAs during their college careers.
Director of athletics Bobby Williams and associate athletic director for student services Chris Thompson announced the academic performances Monday.
The 2008-09 season provided another banner year for academic honors for the Bearkat athletic department.
Irina Sotnikova (tennis) and Barkley Falkner (men's basketball) were named as Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year in their respective sports. The student-athlete of the year award is voted upon by the SLC awards committee, which consists of one administrator for each of the 12 member schools. All nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA, and demonstrated achievement in athletics for at least two years at the nominating institution. Sam Houston student-athletes have earned the award for their sport eight times in the past three seasons.
Twenty-three Bearkats were recognized as either first or second team Academic All-Southland Conference and 32 others were Academic All-SLC honorable mention selections. The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each Southland university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and have demonstrated outstanding ability on the field as a starter or front line reserve as well as in the classroom.
A total of 153 Bearkat student-athletes were named to the Southland Conference Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll during the 2008-09 season. To earn a spot on the honor roll, an athlete must maintain a 3.0 overall grade point average. During the past five years combined, Sam Houston State University has placed more student-athetes on the honor roll than any other member institution.
“Give the credit for our academic success to our outstanding student-athletes and our coaching staff who recruit such quality young men and women,” Williams said. “We take as much pride in our student-athletes' performances in the class room as their accomplishments in the arena. Each year these young men and women seem to raise the bar for themselves. Chris Thompson and her staff in academics do a great job each year coordinating our student-athletes' efforts in the classroom.”
