The Sam Houston State women's soccer team will be looking for more offense when the Bearkats play the second leg of the five-game road swing that is opening the 2009 season Friday at 7 p.m. at North Texas.
The Bearkats were shut out 3-0 by the University of Oklahoma in the season opener at Norman Sunday night. The Sooners fired 32 shots while Sam Houston had only three.
"Our youth showed some on offense Sunday but we were pleased with the way we stayed organized on defense," SHSU head coach Tom Brown said. "We had some first match jitters but, on the whole, the game was a good learning experience for us."
Sam Houston faces another stern test Friday in Denton as the Eagles open their 15th season of women's soccer. North Texas has never had a losing season and have won 73 of 84 home matches since 2000.
"North Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma will be our three toughest tests in non-conference play," Brown said. "We have a number of young players with the athleticism to impact us and move us forward. This match is another step in that process."
All three of Sam Houston's shots in the Oklahoma match were by newcomers. Alex Clifton's attempt was save in the 33rd minute and Jordan Cherry and Shelby Grissett each had scoring attempts blocked by Sooner defenders in the 39th and 87th minutes.
Following Friday's contest in Denton, the Bearkats will play Prairie View A&M Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Prairie View. Sam Houston plays at Houston Baptist on Sunday, Sept. 6, then travels to the UTEP tournament in El Paso for matches on Sept. 11 and 13.
The first home soccer match will be Wednesday, Sept. 16, when the Kats play host to Texas Southern in a 7 p.m. contest at Pritchett Field.
