Carli Kolbi totaled 17 kills and Anna Ferguson added 11 to lead Sam Houston State to a four-set victory over Texas-Pan American in the fifth match of the Comfort Suites/SHSU Invitational volleyball tournament at Johnson Coliseum Friday night.

 The Bearkats won 25-13 21-25 25-20 25-20 for their second victory of the day. Earlier Friday afternoon the Kats went five sets with Southern Utah State. Sam Houston State and Louisiana-Lafayette both finished the first day of the event with 2-0 records.  

Kim Black also was in double figures for Sam Houston with 10 kills. The Bearkats out-pointed UTPA 71 to 51.   Marci Logan led the Broncs with 14 kills.   Sam Houston roared to a quick victory in the first set, leading from wire to wire while posting 15 kills in 23 attempts. But the Kats cooled off in the second set, making more errors (11) than kills (10).   The Bearkats bounced back to win the third and four sets for the victory.  

Sam Houston will play at 11:30 a.m. vs. Delaware State and 7 p.m. vs. Louisiana-Lafayette on the tournament's second day.

SOUTHERN UTAH 3, DELAWARE ST 0

Playing their first women's volleyball match in 20 years, the Southern Utah Thunderbirds defeated Delaware State 25-21 25-21 25-20 in the first match of the Comfort Suites / SHSU Invitational Friday.

Analaine Pelaez led the T-Birds with 12 kills. Cashaano Renfro added nine. Cassandra Joyner led the Hornets with 8 kills.

During the three set match, the score was tied 22 times with 14 lead changes.

LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE 3, UTPA 0

Ariel Krolikowski totaled 12 kills and Bethany Fogler added 10 to lead Louisiana-Lafayette to a 25-22 28-18 25-21 victory over Texas-Pan American Friday afternoon.

Ijanae Holman led the Broncs with 8 kills.

SAM HOUSTON 3, SOUTHERN UTAH 2

Four Bearkats totaled double figure kills as the Bearkats were taken to five sets before defeating Southern Utah 25-16 25-23 30-32 19-25 15-7 in the third match of the Comfort Suites / SHSU Invt.

Carli Kolbe led the Kats with 16 kills. Anna Ferguson added 14, Kim Black had 12 and Kelli Stewart 10.

Analaine Pelaez led the Thunderbirds with 24 kills. During the five sets, the score was tied 34 times.

LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE 3, DELAWARE ST 0

The Ragin' Cajuns defeated Delaware State in three sets 25-9 25-19 25-18 to remain undefeated after their first day of competition in the Inviational.

Amie Goodwin led the team with 11 kills in 30 attempts. Ariel Krolikowski added nine kills.

Cassandra Joyner led the Hornets with 8 kills.
