Two former Sam Houston State University quarterbacks have made their way onto National Football League rosters as NFL action begins this weekend.
Josh McCown, who led the Bearkats to a Southland Conference championship and the NCAA Division I playoff quarterfinals in 2001, will be backing up starter Jake Delhomme for the Carolina Panthers.
McCown, who was drafted in the third round by the Arizona Cardinals in 2002, has appeared in 46 games during his pro career. McCown has thrown for 6,582 yards and 35 touchdowns, also playing for Detroit and Oakland. He earned All-America and Southland Conference "Player of the Year" honors as a Bearkat.
Sam Houston State career passing leader Rhett Bomar was signed to the New York Giants' practice squad. He was drafted in the fifth round in April.
Bomar passed for 5,564 yards in two seasons with the Bearkats in 2007 and 2008. He also ranked second in the NCAA Division I FCS in total yards per game (354.2) last season.
McCown and Bomar are two of 14 former Southland Conference players who appear on league rosters this year. Nine players have found roster spots in the AFC, leaving five others on NFC rosters.
