EL PASO -- The Sam Houston State soccer team was six minutes away from its second victory of the season when Arkansas State tied the match and forcing the Bearkats to settle for a 1-1 tie in their second game at the UTEP Miner Border Showdown Sunday afternoon.
Kirby Zak scored on the Sam Houston's first shot of the contest, taking a feed from Deana Long and left-footing the ball into the back of the net in the ninth minute.
For the next 75 minutes, goalkeeper Jenny Pence and the Bearkat defense held off ASU. But Chelsea Fricke scored on a give-and-go in the 84th minute to knot the score.
The two teams battled through 20 minutes of scoreless overtime before the contest finally ended in a draw.
Arkansas State totaled 13 shots while Sam Houston had nine. Pence was credited with four saves.
Sam Houston State, now 1-3-1 for the season, will play its first home match at Pritchett Field Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The Bearkats will host Texas Southern.
