HUNTSVILLE - The Sam Houston State soccer team put together a strong defensive performance on Friday against the nation's top scoring team, in a 0-0 draw against Louisiana Tech at Pritchett Field.
Bearkat keeper Jenny Pence recorded seven saves in the victory for the Bearkats (2-4-2). Louisiana Tech fired 20 shots at the Bearkat goal, with Pence coming up with two big saves in the second overtime period. Pence, the reigning Southland Conference goalie of the week, also had to fight off 12 corner kicks.
Louisiana Tech (10-0-1) entered the match averaging nearly five goals a game, but the Bearkats defense never let them get a good look at goal, with many shots sailing high or wide from long distance.
The Kats opened the match strong getting four good looks on goal in the first 15 minutes, three off the foot of freshman Kirby Zak. One shot was blocked by a defender and the other two were saved by La Tech keeper Cat Buchanan.
Late in the match, Pence made the save of the night, just getting a hand on a low shot in the box, pushing the ball inches outside the post.
The Kats finished the night with 11 shots, five from Zak and three from Lindsey Posner.
Sam Houston now turns its attention to Southland play with a road trip east to face McNeese State on Friday Oct. 2 and Lamar on Sunday Oct. 4.
