HUNTSVILLE -- Anna Ferguson totaled 16 kills and Carli Kolbe added 11 to lead Sam Houston State to a 25-23 25-21 25-20 non-conference victory over Houston Baptist Tuesday night at Johnson Coliseum.  

Ligia Clemente led Houston Baptist with 11 kills. The Bearkats upped their season record to 9-10 with the victory while HBU fell to 5-13.  

Sam Houston had to rally from behind to win each of the first two sets. The lead changed hands five times and there were 10 ties in the first set and four lead changes and seven ties in the second.  

But in the third and decisive set, the Bearkats jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back.

"It was a team effort," SHSU head coach Brenda Gray said. "The girls made the adjustments we asked for. Our focus tonight was to make sure we blocked better and to serve it a little bit better, staying structured in those areas. I thought we fought hard."

Sam Houston totaled 57 winners with 43 kills, five service aces and nine blocks. The Kats committed 26 errors. HBU had 46 winners, 36 on kills, four aces and six blocks but committed 30 errors.  

Ferguson led the Bearkats with five block assists and Kim Black added four.  

Sam Houston State resumes Southland Conference play, meeting West Division leader Texas State Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Johnson Coliseum. Volleyball tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for youth.
