HATTIESBURG, MS - The Sam Houston volleyball team lost in four sets to Louisiana Tech and in three to Jacksonville University Saturday to complete the squad's weekend action at the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagle Classic.
Anna Ferguson totaled 22 points and Carli Kolbi added 17 as the Sam Houston State volleyball team lost to Louisiana Tech 25-20 23-25 25-21 25-12.
Louisiana Tech combined accurate hitting with tough defense to pull out the victory. The Techsters posted 51 kills with only 20 errors in 153 attempts to hit .203. Sam Houston totaled 47 kills but had 33 errors and 13 shots blocked in their 160 attempts to hit .087.
With the match even at one set apiece, the two teams were tied 18-all in the third when Louisiana Tech won seven of the next 10 points to win the third frame.
Sam Houston jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the fourth set. Louisiana Tech turned their offense up a notch to win 23 of the last 28 points and take the match.
Nataliya Panova led the Techsters with 13 kills. Louisiana Tech upped its season record to 6-1 while Sam Houston fell to 4-3.
Sam Houston lost to Jacksonville 25-22 26-24 25-17 in the Bearkats' final match of the tournament. The losses Saturday drop Sam Houston to 4-4 for the season
Kolbe led the Bearkats with a match high 15 kills. Aidan Yeager led the Dolphins with 10 kills.
Jacksonville broke open the first set with an early 5-1 run to go up 9-5. Sam Houston came within two points, 23-21, by a kill by Yeager ended the set.
The Bearkats held a 12-7 lead and were tied 22-22 in the second set but could never get the lead back. JU opened up an 19-11 lead that the Kats could not overcome in the third frame.
Sam Houston State libero Jamie Haas was selected to the all-tournament team.
The Bearkats play host to the University of Houston Cougars at 7 p.m. in Johnson Coliseum Tuesday night in their next action.
