HUNTSVILLE - Giorgia Pozzan, Nadia Dubyanskaya and Cally Woerner won their singles match and Sam Houston took the doubles point to give the Bearkat women's tennis team a 4-2 victory over UT-Pan American in the opening dual match of the season for SHSU.
Pozzan, the only returning player for Sam Houston State, dispatched Megan Bedeau 6-2 6-3 at number one singles and paired with freshman Sheridan Currie for an 8-4 victory over Bedeau and Luisa Cantu at number one doubles.
Dubyanskaya defeated Sarah Burton 6-4 7-6 at number four and junior transfer Cally Woerner won 6-0 6-2 over Andrea Salvetova at number five. Woerner and freshman Tatyana Postnikova paired for a 9-8 victory over UTPA's number two doubles duo.
The match was played in 40 degree weather and a biting north wind.
"For our first match with such a young team, it was a good effort," Sam Houston head coach Jim Giachino said. "With the wind and the cold today, conditions were horrible. But the girls battled and we picked up the victory."
Sam Houston will travel to Houston to face Rice at 1 p.m. at the Autry Courts Sunday and return to Huntsville to play host to Abilene Christian Monday at 3 p.m.
