Arlington - Carli Kolbe, Kelli Stewart and Kim Black all totaled double figure kills as Sam Houston State defeat UT-Arlington 20-25 25-18- 25-20 19-25 15-11 in a Southland Conference volleyball match Saturday afternoon at Texas Hall.
Kolbe, who become the 20th Bearkat to total more than 1,000 kills in her career in a loss at Texas State Thursday night, continued to roll with a team leading 15 kills against the Mavericks.
Stewart produced 14 kills and Black added 11. Kolbe and Black each collected six blocks.
Amanda Aguilera led both teams with 28 kills.
The victory ups Sam Houston to 10-13 for the season and 4-4 in Southland Conference action. UTA dropped to 9-13 for the year and 3-5 in league action.
During the five sets, the score was tied 15 times with six lead changes. The closeness of the match was reflected by the final hitting totals. Sam Houston and UTA both totaled 72 points with 59 kills for the Mavericks and 58 for the Bearkats. UTA committed 32 hitting errors while Sam Houston had 28.
The victory was the third in the Bearkat's last four matches. Sam Houston, a team that went 10-2 in five-set matches last year, is now 3-2 for the 2010 season in five-setters.
Sam Houston continues its road swing through the Southland next week, playing Wednesday night at Stephen F. Austin and Saturday at Southeastern Louisiana.
Next home match for the Bearkats is Thursday, Oct. 28 when Sam Houston plays host to Texas State at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
The Oct. 28 match is "Kats for the Cause" night with several activities promoting breast cancer awareness. It also is 99 cent menu item night at Johnson with all items at the concession stand just 99 cents.
