Women's soccer blasts Nicholls 5-1

Thibodaux, La. - Four Bearkats scored goals as the Sam Houston State women's soccer team produced a split on its final regular season Southland Conference weekend road trip with a 5-1 victory over Nicholls Sunday afternoon.

Sam Houston (8-8-1, Southland 4-2) out-shot the Colonels 15 to 13 and took six cornerkicks to Nicholls' one. The Bearkats lost Friday night 1-0 at Southeastern Louisiana.

Three of the game's six goals were scored in the first 10 minutes as Tricia Mallory tallied on a pass from Kirby Zak to give SHSU a 1-0 leader just 7:50 into the contest.

The Colonels equalized just 17 seconds later on a goal by Kaity Mattsson. At the 9:45 mark, Amanda Biega took another pass from Zak and fired in what proved to the match-winner.

Sam Houston took the 2-1 lead in intermission and came out firing in the second half.

Mallory scored a second time at the 61:14 mark on an assist by Kelsi Brown and Natalie Johnson tallied three minutes later on a pass from Biega.

Zak scored an unassisted goal with six minutes remaining in the contest.

Mallory's goals were her ninth and tenth of the season, breaking Zak's school mark for goals in one season by a freshman.

Zak tallied her fifth goal of the 2010 season, giving the sophomore a career total of 14 goals. That ties Zak for fifth place in Sam Houston career goals with Luana Miessa who scored 14 in 2007 and 2008.

Edenstrom, Biega and Johnson each scored their third goals of the year.

Sam Houston will finish the regular season with three home matches, playing host to Stephen F. Austin Friday, October 22; UTSA Friday, October 29 and Texas State Sunday, October 31.

The top six teams in the final regular season standings qualify for the annual Southland Conference post-season tournament in San Marcos Thursday, November 4 through Sunday November 7.
