The AVCA is pleased to announce that the sixth Volleyball Market/AVCA Play of the Week of the season has been awarded to the Sam Houston State University volleyball team. The Bearkats earned the honor after beating the other four semifinalists -Eastern Michigan University, the University of Minnesota Morris, Nixa High School and the University of Oklahoma- during a week-long voting period.
The award-winning play came during Sam Houston State's home match against Southland Conference foe Stephen F. Austin State University on October 6. The 41-second play is highlighted by the Bearkat's miraculous blocking coverage to win the final point of the match over the Ladyjacks. The rally began with a serve from the Bearkats that was given right back to them with a tip from the Ladyjacks. Sam Houston stepped up and saved the tip which was set up for an attack that was blocked by Stephen F. Austin. The block was covered by libero, Kaylee Hawkins, and set up for another attack that was also rejected by the Ladyjacks, but the Bearkats fought to cover and sent the ball right back over. After an out-of-bounds hit from Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston State won the match in five sets.
The play, will now join the upcoming weeks' finalists in becoming eligible for the Volleyball Market/AVCA Play of the Year, to be announced at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet on Friday, Dec. 17, at the AVCA Convention in Kansas City, Mo.
