The Bearkats defeated McNeese State 2-1 Friday night at Pritchett to up their season record to 6-7-1. Lamar suffered its first Southland loss of the season, falling to Stephen F. Austin 3-1 in Nacogdoches. The Cardinals stand 4-7-1 for the year.
Sophomore Kirby Zak and freshman Hilary Mallory provided the goals in Sam Houston's victory Friday. The two forwards continue to work their way up in the Bearkat soccer record books.
Zak set the school record for most goals in a season by a freshman with nine last year. Now Mallory is trying to break that record. She scored her eighth goal in the 62nd minute Friday, a tally that proved to be the winning goal for Sam Houston.
With her third goal of the 2010 season, Zak has moved up to sixth place in the career scoring standings for the Bearkats with 12 goals in the past two years.
Mallory's eight goals this year tie her for sixth in the school record books for most goals in one season. Kim Brown in 2003 and Raquel Bueno in 2008 set the SHSU marks with 11 goals in one year. Luanna Miessa tallied 10 times in 2008.
Sunday's matchup with the Cardinals marks the fourth time in the short histories of the two programs that Lamar and Sam Houston have met in women's soccer program. While SHSU started its soccer program in 2003, Lamar did not add the sport until 2007.
Sam Houston has won twice in the three times the pair have battled. The Bearkats won 5-0 in 2007 and lost 2-1 in 2008, both matches being played in Huntsville. Last year Adrianna Vasquez scored the lone goal to give Sam Houston a 1-0 victory in Beaumont.
Admission to soccer matches at Pritchett Field is free.
