Three Kats named All-Southland Conference

Two other Bearkats, middle blocker Kim Black and libero/outside hitter Kaylee Hawkins, were named as honorable mention selections on the 2010 All-Southland Conference volleyball team announced Wednesday.
Hawkins also is a second-year selection. She was a first team all-Southland choice as a true freshman libero in 2009.
The All-Southland Conference team is selected annually by a vote of the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
Kolbe, the A&M Consolidated product from College Station, ranks third in the league in kills (401) and kills per set (3.61). She is the first Bearkat to post more than 400 kills in a season in consecutive years since Alisha Fowler in 2004-05.
Black, a junior from Huntsville, ranks second in the Southland in blocks this season. Her 137 total blocks rank as the most by a Bearkat in one season since Sam Houston moved up to NCAA Division I competition in 1987.
Hawkins, a sophomore from Dickinson, stands eighth in the Southland Conference in digs and has been a major force as an outside hitter in the Kats' drive into the Southland Conference tournament with three consecutive match wins.
Choloe Smith of Central Arkansas was named as Southland "Player of the Year," becoming first player in league history to earn player of the year honors in three consecutive seasons.
The 2010 Southland Conference Volleyball Tournament gets underway Friday in Huntsville, Texas, with four first-round matches. The semifinals will be held Saturday with the championship match being played Sunday at 3 p.m. CST on the Southland Conference Television Network.
Sam Houston is seeded No. 5 in the tournament and will face No. 4 seed UT-Arlington at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the first round of competition. Regular season champion Central Arkansas is the No. 1 seed.
Ticket prices for day session are $10 for an adult and $7 for youths ages 3-18. All-tournament passes are $15. There is no charge for Southland Conference students with a valid institutional I.D.
Tickets are on sale online at www.gobearkats.com/tickets and at the Sam Houston athletic ticket office located in the Ron Mafrige Field House in Bowers Stadium. Ticket office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The ticket office telephone is (936) 294-1729.
