The Thomas F. Davis Football Endowment is given in honor of Tommy Davis, former All-America and All-Lone Star Conference football player and math professor at Sam Houston State University.
The award is given annually to a football player who exhibits character on the football field and high performance in the classroom.
Stewart earned his third Bearkat football letter this season as a special teams player and reserve safety. The three-time Southland Conference Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll member owns a 3.29 overall grade point average as an accounting major. During the 2010 spring semester, Stewart produced a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
He was the winner of the SHSU Lettermen's Association T award as outstanding sophomore student-athlete of 2008-09. He was a two-time All-District 15-5A defensive back for coach Ron Lynch at Magnolia.
His brother, Chris, played football for the Bearkats and his sister, Kelli, is a current member of the SHSU volleyball team. Both his father and mother were student-athletes at Sam Houston as well.
Tommy Davis has played an integral role in the development of both academics and athletics at Sam Houston State and in the Southland Conference.
A graduate of Sam Houston State, Davis received his bachelor's of science and master's of arts in Huntsville and later received his doctoral degree from the University of Texas.
In 50 years of committed service at Sam Houston State, Davis was a member of the university's athletic council for 38 years and served as its chair for nine years. Davis has served as president and vice president of the conference's advisory committee and was a member of the NCAA committee on athletic certification. He has even served as the official clock operator for football and basketball at Sam Houston State since 1965.
A member of the Bearkat Hall of Honor, Davis was named to the all-Texas and NAIA All-America football teams and was listed as an Outstanding Young Man in America. Davis' commitment to excellence was evident early on as a freshman walkon in football at Sam Houston State. He was a four-year starter and played on both offense and defense helping the Bearkats to two bowl victories during his playing days.
