Flanders, Jenkins named All-Southland first team

Eleven Bearkat football players were named to the team, six as members of the first and second teams and five as honorable mention .
The group of eleven student-athletes led a young Sam Houston team to a 6-5 overall record and a tie for third place in the 2010 Southland race with a 4-3 mark in conference action. With largest number of lettermen lost in the program's NCAA Division I history (28) and only eight starters returning, Sam Houston was tabbed to finish seventh in the eight team race in the preseason poll of league head coaches.
Flanders, a Midwest City, Okla., product who transferred in August from Kansas State, became only the second Sam Houston running back to lead the Southland Conference in rushing in SHSU's 23 years in the league. Flanders totaled 948 net yards and 13 touchdowns in 10 games, both single season school records for a freshman running back. He also set school records for most 100-yard rushing games in a season (7) and most consecutive 100-yard performances (6).
Jenkins, a sophomore free safety from Galveston, led the Bearkat defense in interceptions with three and totaled 58 tackles including four for losses.
All-Southland second team members from Sam Houston included center Travis Watson, defensive lineman J. T. Cleveland, linebacker Will Henry and return specialist Brandon Closner.
Watson, a junior from Norman, Okla., started every game at center for a Bearkat offense that led the league in rushing yardage.
Cleveland, a sophomore defensive tackle from Baytown who started every contest, led the SHSU defensive line with 43 tackles including seven for losses and five quarterback sacks. Sam Houston led the Southland Conference and ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division I FCS football in rushing defense.
Henry, a junior from Waco, led the Kat defense with 13 tackles for losses and five quarterback sacks. Henry, an All-Southland honorable mention selection as a sophomore, totaled 48 tackles starting all 11 games in 2010.
Closner, a junior from Arlington, ranked second in the Southland in punt returns (11.52 yards per game) and third in the league in kickoff returns (25.82) and all-purpose yardage (126.45).
Honorable mention All-Southland Bearkats included offensive lineman Cameron Pound of Moore, Okla.; place kicker Miguel Antonio of Lovelady and defensive backs Darnell Taylor of Mesquite, Bookie Sneed of Conroe and Dax Swanson of Waco.
"This was an exciting season and it is great to see so many Bearkats honored as All-Southland Conference," head coach Willie Fritz said. "The best thing about all these players is that none of them are seniors. They will all return in 2011."
