Zak, Mallory named All-Southland Conference

Sophomore Kirby Zak became the first Sam Houston women's soccer player to earn first team All-Southland Conference honors and freshman Tricia Mallory is the first Bearkat to be voted as the recipient of a regular season league individual honor.
The Southland Conference announced its 2010 All-Southland Conference women's soccer team Tuesday.
Zak, a product of Aledo High School, was Sam Houston's second-leading scorer with five goals this season. Four of her goals came in Southland Conference matches, ranking her second in the league in that category.
Mallory, who joined the Kats this season after an outstanding career at Klein High School in Spring, set a Sam Houston record for most goals by a freshman with 10. She broke Zak's record of nine set last year. Mallory ranked second in the Southland in total season goals.
Mallory was a second team All-Southland player.
Two seniors also were named as All-Southland honorable mention selections. Defender Nichole Watkins and goalkeeper Jenny Pence have been four-year starters for the Bearkats. Pence holds 11 Sam Houston school goalkeeping records.
Southeastern Louisiana goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus and Stephen F. Austin midfielder Kylie Louw were voted as Southland Conference "Co-Players of the Year."
The Southland Conference post-season tournament, which will decide the league's representative in the NCAA tournament, begins Thursday in San Marcos.
Sam Houston takes on host team Texas State in the battle of the No. 5 and 4 seeds at 7 p.m. Thursday. UTSA and Lamar will play at 4:30 p.m. in the No. 3-6 matchup. Semifinal matchups are Friday evening and the conference finals will be played on Sunday afternoon.
