Bowling defeats defending NCAA national champion

Sam Houston's first year women's bowling program served notice this weekend that the Bearkats are a power to be respected as SHSU defeated defending NCAA Division I national champion Fairleigh Dickinson on their home lanes.
The Kats are participating in the FDU New Jersey Jamboree. Sam Houston won three of their five matches on the first day of the tournament.
The Bearkat bowlers also posted victories over No. 13 Adelphi and unranked Long Island. Sam Houston lost to Saint Francis of Pennsylvania, another first year program and No. 8 New Jersey City.
In the 762-699 victory over FDU, Sam Houston jumped out with a 15-pin lead after match one and never looked back.
"I was very proud of what the girls did today on day one of the tournament," Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagan. "Once again it was a tough demanding start to the day but we ended on a high note that only few teams ever can say they have accomplished and thats not only beating the No. 1 rated team in the nation and defending NCAA National Champion but doing so respectively at their own tournament".
Sam Houston opened the day with a 708-684 loss to Saint Francis. The Kats then defeated Long Island 721-643, lost to New Jersey City 758-705 before ending the day with a 765-703 win over Adelphi and the victory over FDU.
Following the qualifying Baker rounds of competition on the first day of the FDU New Jersey Jamboree, Sam Houston stands sixth out of the 18 teams in the event.
Maryland Eastern Shore stands first with a 4-1 record and 3,904 total pins. Rounding out the top 10 are New Jersey City (4-1, 3,797 pins), Fairleigh Dickinson (4-1, 3,720 pins), Kutztown (3-2 3,702 pins), Vanderbilt (3-2, 3642 pins), Sam Houston (3-2, 3,635 pins), Delaware State (2-3, 3,529 pins), Sacred Heart (4-1, 3,502 pins), Morgan State (3-2, 3,490 pins) and Adelphi (2-3, 3,479 pins).
Sam Houston now holds a 13-7 match record for the season after finishing as the runner-up in the Great Ozark Invitational last week in Springfield, Mo.
This weekend's tournament includes outstanding competition. Besides FDU, picked No. 1 in the preseason rankings, the tournament field also includes No. 2 Maryland Eastern Shore, No. 4 Vanderbilt, No. 7 Delaware State, No. 8 New Jersey City, No. 9 Kutztown, No. 10 Sacred Heart, No. 13 Adelphi, No. 16 Morgan State and No. 18 Florida A&M.
