
Women's basketball wins exhibition 53-39

Britni Martin scored 14 points and Sequeena Thomas added 12 to lead the Sam Houston women's basketball team to a 53-39 victory over Howard Payne in an exhibition game Saturday night at Johnson Coliseum.
The Bearkats jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead, but the Yellow Jackets came back to cut the margin to one, 28-27 at halftime. The Kats out-scored HPU 25-12 in the second period to earn the victory.
Chanice Smith added eight points for Sam Houston. Brittany Roberson led HPU with 9 points. Thomas and SHSU's Zoe Tucker were the game's rebound leaders, both with nine.
Martin, a sophomore from Conroe, missed the 2009-10 season with a knee injury after an outstanding freshmen year in 2011. The 6-0 forward went 5-for-8 from the field including four three point baskets. Martin also led the Kats with seven assists and four steals. She played 36 of the game's 40 minutes.
Sam Houston dominated the Yellow Jackets under the boards, out-rebounding Howard Payne 56 to 32. The Kats pulled down 23 offensive boards.
The Bearkat women open their 2010-11 regular season schedule Friday and Saturday, Nov. 12 and 13, competing in the University of Mississippi tournament. Sam Houston will play Southeastern Missouri on the first day of the event.
Sam Houston opens its home schedule Wednesday, Nov. 17, when the Kats play host to Centenary in the annual "Pack the House" game at Johnson Coliseum at 12 noon.
