Brittany Brooks named Southland Player of Week

Brooks led the Bearkats to consecutive upset victories over the top two teams in the league, defeating No. 1 Lamar 73-65 Wednesday and No. 2 UTSA 73-72 in double overtime Saturday.
The 5-4 guard from Spring posted career highs with 14 rebounds against Lamar and 29 points against UTSA.
Brooks scored the go-ahead 3-pointer in the Lamar win and against UTSA, forced overtime with a layup with 27 seconds left in regulation. She was responsible for 11 of Sam Houston's 20 points in the two overtime periods.
"Brittany did a tremendous job for us in both games," Sam Houston head coach Brenda Nichols said. "She's definitely been a leader on the court for us this year"
Brooks played all 40 minutes in the Lamar win and 45 out of a possible 50 minutes in the UTSA win. Her performances moved her into the top-10 in Sam Houston State career scoring with 1,078 points.
The Sam Houston women have won three of their last four games and are one win away from clinching their first berth in the State Farm Southland Conference Post-Season Classic since 2004.
The tournament will be held March 9-12 at the Merrell Center in Katy.
