Arlington - Despite 19 points from Brittany Brooks and 18 by Ray Alexander, UT-Arlington ended the Bearkat women's winning streak with an 87-76 victory in a Southland Conference game at Texas Hall.
Tamara Simmons scored 22 and four other Mavericks scored in double figures.
Whitney Smith added 11 points for Sam Houston (9-17 6-8 Southland). The Bearkats never led, falling behind by as many as 20 points in the second period.
Other Mavs in double figures were freshman forward Veronica Mergerson with 12 and senior guard Kiarra Shofner with 10. Shofner was perfect from the field, 4-of-4 and 2-of-2 from behind the 3-point line.
UTA produced a narrow 44-42 margin scoring in the paint and both team's benches produced 16 points.
The Mavericks out-boarded Sam Houston 55-41. Whitney Smith led the Kats with nine rebounds.
Sam Houston will close out the 2010 regular season with a pair of home games Wednesday and Saturday against Northwestern State and Texas State, respectively.
The Bearkats already have clinched a berth in the Southland post-season tournament, their first since 2004.
