
No. 6 seed on line as women host Demons Wednesday

The Sam Houston State women's basketball team could wrap up the No. 6 seed in the State Farm Southland Conference Post-Season Classic with a victory over Northwestern State when the two meet Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Johnson Coliseum.
With Central Arkansas still ineligible for post-season play, Northwestern State and Sam Houston are tied for sixth in the overall league standings each with 6-8 Southland records. The Sam Houston women already have clinched their first post-season tournament appearance since 2004.
Sam Houston also will be attempting to post double figure wins for the first time since 2000. The Bearkats are 9-17 for the season. The Bearkats are led by three seniors - 5-4 Brittany Brooks(14.5 points per game), 5-11 Whitney Smith (12.2) and 5-5 Ray Alexander (12.2).
The Demons stand 13-13 for the year. Top scorer for Northwestern State is 5-6 guard Brittiany Houston with 12.7 points per game.
Northwestern State and Sam Houston are meeting for the 46th time in women's basketball. The Demons own a 33-12 advantage in the series. Northwestern State has won six of the last eight meetings. The Demons won 85-82 and 94-57 in Natchitoches the past two years. Sam Houston won 77-66 in Huntsville in 2007.
Smith and Brooks both have entered the Bearkat women's 1,000-point career club. Smith ranks No. 5 in SHSU career scoring with 1,181 points. Brook moved into the 1,000-point club with her first basket of the Nicholls victory and now stands No. 11 all-time at Sam Houston with 1,112 points. Only once before, in 1982, have two players from Sam Houston reached the 1,000 point career mark in the same season.
