Creighton wins in opening game of Bearkat Invitational

Trever Adams went 3-for-6 including a home run to lead Creighton to a 15-8 victory over Northern Colorado in the first game of the Bearkat Invitational baseball tournament Friday afternoon.
Up 5-3, the Blue Jays exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth inning. Creighton takes on Sam Houston at 6:30 Friday night.
The Northern Colorado Bears and the Creighton Bluejays visit Don Sanders Stadium this weekend as the Bearkats host the Sam Houston State Baseball Invitational.
The teams will play a double round robin with games on Friday and Saturday at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. and on Sunday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Creighton brings the top record into the tournament, starting their season 3-1. The Bluejays return 22 of 36 lettermen including six position starters from last year's team that rolled up a 31-25 overall record and finishing fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Senior outfielder Robbie Knight leads Creighton with a .474 batting average that includes two doubles and a home run.
Northern Colorado stands 1-3 coming into the tournament. The Bears bring back 18 of 25 lettermen including eight starters from their 18-35 squad in 2009.
Junior infielder T. J. Berge, sophomore outfielder Adrian Schenk and junior outfielder Bret Fanning led the Bears at the plate.
Creighton is making its second visit to Don Sanders Stadium. The Bluejays and the Bearkats opened the 2009 season with a four-game series. Sam Houston swept all four games, winning 8-6, 4-3 in 10 innings, 7-5 and 5-4 in 11 innings.
Sam Houston lost its opening series to two highly rated Mountain West Conference teams TCU and Utah. The Bearkats posted their first victory Tuesday night over Texas Southern
The Bearkats return 10 lettermen from their 2009 squad that earned Sam Houston its third consecutive NCAA Regional appearance by winning the Southland Conference post-season tournament.
Infielders Braeden Riley, who led the NCAA in total hits (111) last year, and Ryan Mooney are two of the top returning players off that squad.
