Texas State swept a Southland Conference softball doubleheader from Sam Houston State Saturday afternoon, defeating the Bearkats 4-2 and 6-2.
The Bobcats opened the first game scoreing three runs with two out in the bottom of the first inning and held SHSU at bay for six more innings as Chandler Hall struck out eight Sam Houston batters.
Shortstop Hailey Wiginton and right fielder Erin Burford both produced RBIs in a two-run third inning to cut the Bobcat lead to one but Texas State added an insurance run in the fifth and hung on for the victory.
Morgan Mikulin gave up only three hits and only one of the Bobcat runs was earned as Sam Houston committed three errors.
In the second game, Sam Houston jumped out to a 2-0 lead as first baseman Amy Brown singled and scored from third on a passed ball in the second inning and Erin Burford powered an RBI double to left field for a run in the third frame.
But, with two outs in the fourth, the produced two runs on back-to-back singles by Megan Parten and Lindsay Matt and two more on a Kristina Tello triple. Texas State added two more runs in the sixth inning.
Tomi Garrison took the loss in the circle, pitching four and a third innings. Tori Benvadez went the rest of the game in relief.
The two teams battle in the final game of the series tomorrow at 12 noon.
