Hammond, La. - The Sam Houston softball team ended its 20-inning scoring drought in fine fashion as the Bearkats totaled 22 hits and 17 runs to sweep a doubleheader from Southeastern Louisiana Saturday 6-2 and 12-2.
Senior Morgan Mikulin pitched all 19 innings in the two games, upping her 2010 record to 12-17. The Bearkats now stand 17-16 for the year and 10-13 in Southland Conference action.
In the first game, Mikulin limited the Lions to four hits in seven innings and striking out three batters. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI. Mikulin's single up the middle put the Bearkats up 1-0 in the top of the first.
Southeastern Louisiana (10-30 2-19) took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first, scoring twice on two hits and three Bearkat errors. But the Lions returned the favor in the top of the fourth. Amy Brown tied the game on a bases loaded single. Southeastern Louisiana walked in three runs and gave up another on a fielding error as the Kats put a five-spot on the board.
Erin Burford hit a solo home run and a two run single and Hailey Wiginton added a three-run triple to lead the Bearkats in the second game. Amanda Lindsey started the scoring with a two-run single in the first and Tomi Garrison added an RBI double. In the pitching circle Mikulin limited the Lions to five hits in five innings.
Unfortunately for the Kats, they did not gain much ground in their fight to climb into the top six in the league standings and clinch a Southland Conference tournament berth. Sixth place McNeese State swept UTA 6-0 and 4-2 Saturday to remain three games ahead of the eighth place Bearkats.
Southeastern Louisiana and Sam Houston will conclude the three-game series Sunday afternoon. Sam Houston will wrap up regular season play with a pair of home series against Central Arkansas and Nicholls the next two weekends.
