For the second year in a row, Sam Houston State was one of 32 winners in the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball “Pack the House” Challenge.
“Pack the House” is national effort in which conferences and institutions compete to build attendance. Each school's marketing staffs selected a home game and designated that date as a “Pack the House” game with the goal of setting an attendance record.
One winner from each of the 31 conferences and one from a group of independent institutions were named. Selections were based on marketing plan creativity and attendance criteria.
The NCAA awards prizes to each winner who in turn donates the $500 to the nonprofit organization of each winning institution's choice. Almost two-thirds of the Division I membership – 184 institutions – participated in the effort that attracted more than 559,000 fans.
Sam Houston State hosted a school record crowd of 2,456 fans at its home opening women's basketball game on Nov. 17, 2009, against the University of Mississippi. More than 2,000 Huntsville area elementary school children attended the Friday afternoon game at Johnson Coliseum.
The SHSU women's basketball team donated $500.00 given by NCAA to Sam Houston Elementary in Huntsville, TX. Sam Houston Elementary is this years winner and recepient of the spirit trophy as the most vocal elementary group that attended the "Pack the House" game.
