Sam Houston State basketball coach Jason Hooten has announced his first signing as the head of the men's program. Marcus Williams will join the basketball program for the 2010-11 season. Williams (5-10, 165) is a junior college transfer from Cochise College in Douglas, Ariz.
Williams is a scoring guard who averaged 20.3 points per games this past season and poured in 18.4 points per game as a freshman. He is a two-time first-team all-conference and all region selection. As a freshman he was an honorable mention all-America pick and the past season was named to the second team all-America squad.
"We are very excited about the addition of Marcus Williams to our team," Hooten said. "Marcus is a scoring guard that has had a lot of history in winning games. Although Marcus is small in stature, he is large in production."
Williams was invited last summer to Jerry Mullen's Top 80 Camp in Tulsa, Okla., designed for the top 80 junior college players in the country. He was ranked as the No. 36 player in that event.
Hooten said in addition to his scoring, Williams is also a very strong defender.
"He had a tremendous season earning 2nd team Junior College All-America," Hooten said. "Marcus is a big time athlete who can score the ball and defend 94 feet."
The two-year total for Cochise College was 50-13, including a 26-5 mark this past season.
"Marcus Williams is a gifted athlete who will produce to win games and be productive on the floor," said Cochise College head coach Jerry Carrillo. "He was very good to coach and is a winner."
At Rio Rancho High School in New Mexico, Williams led his team to a 5A state championship his junior year. He was a first team all-state selection in both his junior and senior years.
