The annual Orange-White football game will conclude 2010 spring training for the Sam Houston State Bearkats on Saturday April 24. Kickoff is set for 9:30 a.m. at Bowers Stadium.
The game will serve as the final opportunity for the more than 70 student-athletes competing for starting berths on the 2010 football squad to show their abilities to new Sam Houston head coach Willie Fritz and his staff.
Sam Houston State returns 35 lettermen from the 2009 squad that rolled up a 5-6 record and finished fifth in the Southland Conference. That number includes 10 starters (three on offense and seven on defense). A total of 18 players who red-shirted last season along with several newcomers and walk-ons join the mix.
"This is an exciting time for all the staff. We're very impressed with the work ethic this spring," Fritz said. "With the large number of players we graduated last year (26 seniors), there are a lot holes to fill. The players have been working hard."
The night before the game (Friday, April 23), Sam Houston will host the 22nd annual SHSU Football Dinner and Auction starting at 5:30 p.m. at the HEARTS Veterans Conference Center off state highway 75 North. Go to SHSU Football Dinner and Auction link for more information.
The rosters for the Orange and White teams and the format of the spring game will be announced during the final week of spring ball.
