Two Sam Houston Bearkats played in the 2010 Texas Collegiate League All-Star Game in Victoria on Monday, July 5.
After a spectacular first half of the summer season, SHSU outfielders Mark Hudson, the reigning Texas Collegiate League's Player of the Year, and Greg Olson were selected to play in the league's All-Star game.
Olson and Hudson, who are on opposing teams during the summer - Olson plays for the Brazos Valley Bombers and Hudson plays for the Victoria Generals - were teammates again, headlining the South squad.
Hudson may not have gotten a hit but he scored a run and also drove in an RBI, while Olson went 1 for 4 with a single.
Reminiscent of Major League Baseball's All-Star Game in 2002, the TLC All-Star Game ended in a 7-7 tie.
So far this summer, Hudson and Olson are proving themselves as two of the league's top offensive players.
Hudson is batting .350 with four extra-base hits and eight RBIs for the Generals, who are currently in second place and one game behind the Bombers.
Olson is hitting .349 with 22 hits and 11 RBIs for the first-place Bombers, who play their home games in Bryan.
Helping to round out the pitching staff on the Bombers are a pair of Olson's SHSU teammates, Andrew Massey and Michael Hilliard.
Played in mostly a reliever role, Massey has allowed just four runs in 17 2/3 innings of work for a 2.04 earned run average. Hilliard has started five games and has a 3-2 record with a 5.12 ERA.
Venturing outside the state of Texas are a pair of SHSU pitchers, Brent Powers and Jordan Westra.
Playing for the Morehead City Marlins of the Coastal Plain League in North Carolina, Powers is having a good summer so far. Powers has attained a 4-2 record, including two complete games, with a 2.10 ERA. Powers has also struck out 48 batters in a little more than 34 innings and hitters are batting just .203 against him.
Heading even further from home is Westra, who plays for the Kelowna Falcons in the West Coast League in Southwest Canada.
Westra has a 1-1 mark and has recorded three saves. In a little more than 18 innings, Westra has allowed just five runs and has 21 strikeouts against 11 walks.
