Kats finish fall practice with 62-play scrimmage

The Sam Houston State football team hit the field at Bowers Stadium Thursday night for the final scrimmage of fall camp. The Kats ended up running 62 plays on the night, giving head coach Willie Fritz a chance to see some things he hasn't seen yet.
"I wanted to give ourselves the chance to go live and tackle to the ground in some certina situations, especially in special teams," Fritz said. "That is something you just don't do much of, but we didn't want to go into the Baylor game not having done that yet."
The offense moved the ball early in the scrimmage much better than they did last time out on Friday, but when it mattered most in the red zone, it was the defense stepping up and making the plays, especially on special teams.
The defense had a pair of field goal blocks on the night with Robert Shaw and Kenneth Jenkins both getting a hand on a ball.
"We work like crazy on extra point and field goal block and we are going to continue to work on that," Fritz said. "At the same time, we have worked on protection, and that should never happen. You should never get a ball blocked from the outside like that. We are going to go in and study the video tape and see where the mistakes were."
One of the highlights of the scrimmage for the offense was a 23-yard touchdown run by new comer Timothy Flanders. The transfer from Kansas State found a seam and took it straight up the middle getting to the end zone nearly untouched.
"He is a heck of a running back," Fritz said. "He has only been here a couple of days, so he is still learning things. It is just a matter of how quickly he can learn out system if and how much he plays in Waco."
The Kats will workout again on Friday before taking Saturday off and begin preparations for Baylor on September 4.

Sam Houston opens its home schedule on Saturday Sept. 25 with Bearkat Family Weekend against Gardner-Webb. Special events during the evening include an appearance by the Houston Texans cheerleaders, a salute to Hillcrest Heroes honoring local police and fire-fighters, a huge pregame tailgate and a postgame fireworks display.
Other home games will be Oct. 16 (Homecoming) vs. Southeastern Louisiana, Nov. 6 vs. McNeese State and Nov. 20 vs. Texas State. The final three home games will kickoff at 2 p.m.
