After playing seven of their first eight matches on the road, the Sam Houston women's soccer team finally returns to friendly turf at Pritchett Field as the squad begins a three-match home stand Friday at 7 p.m. with the Baylor Bears.
Head coach Tom Brown's Bearkats have been road warriors traveling as far afield as Mobile, Al., and battling several key injuries in a tough pre-conference schedule.
Sam Houston enters this weekend's action with a 2-5-1 record, but four of the five losses were by only one goal. The Kats defeated North Texas 1-0 in overtime two weeks ago in their only home match at Pritchett Field thus far.
"Definitely, it's good to come home," Brown said. "The best thing is that we only have four more road trips the rest of the regular season. Our goal all season long has been to build towards being at out peak when Southland Conference play begins in two weeks. We're making progress."
Baylor brings a 5-1-1 record into Friday night's contest. The Bears and the Bears have several common opponents. Sam Houston started its season with a pair of 1-0 losses at Houston and Houston Baptist. Baylor defeated UH 1-0 and HBU 6-0. Baylor also has a pair of victories over Southland teams UTSA (4-0) and McNeese (7-0).
The Bears are led by forward Lisa Silwinski and Hanna Gilmore who each have scored five goals.
Sunday at 1 p.m. Sam Houston plays host to 0-4 Grambling. The Tigers are coached now by former Sam Houston head coach Marcia Oliviera.
Sam Houston freshman Tricia Mallory leads the Bearkats in scoring with four goals and two assists this season. Kirby Zak, Amanda Biega and Kelsi Brown each have scored once.
The Kats defense has been a strength with Jenny Pence in goal and Lindsey Posner leading the back line.
Admission to women's soccer at Pritchett Field is free.
