Soccer blanks Grambling 2-0 Sunday afternoon

Huntsville - In a match marred by two red cards and four yellows, Sam Houston State shut out Grambling 2-0 for the Bearkats' third women's soccer victory of the season Sunday afternoon at Pritchett Field.

Emily Edenstrom and Natalie Johnson scored the goals for Sam Houston.

Edenstrom powered a shot in from 10 feet out after pulling down a long free kick from Deanna Long in the 17th minute.

Johnson's goal came in the 77th minute on a cross from the right side from Emily Jurecka.

Sam Houston goalkeeper Jenny Pence picked up her third shutout of the season, upping her four-year career record to 20, a school record.

Grambling's offsides trap and several acrobatic saves by goalkeeper Erin Molinaro frustrated the Bearkat offense throughout the afternoon. Sam Houston totaled 32 shots while Grambling was credited with seven.

The free kick that set up Sam Houston's first goal came after Kirby Zak and Denise Perez both were sent off after a hard tackle by Perez and shoving between the pair.

Sam Houston returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. against Prairie View A&M.
