Family Weekend has history of exciting games

Sam Houston celebrates its 26th annual Bearkat Family football weekend when SHSU plays host to the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs from Boiling Springs, N.C.
The contest marks the 26th annual Bearkat Family Weekend football game at Bowers Stadium. The Bearkats are 20-5 in the previous 25 events.
Gardner-Webb brings a 2-1 record into the contest including a victory over NCAA Division I FBS foe Akron. The Bulldogs are members of the NCAA Division I FCS Big South Conference.
The game marks the home debut for Sam Houston football coach Willie Fritz.
Sam Houston State has won eight of its last 10 Bearkat Family Weekend games. Two of the last four years Mother Nature has played a key role in the festivities.
In 2005, the Parents/Family Weekend matchup with Missouri State was canceled due to Hurricane Rita. Last year, Hurricane Ike forced cancelation of the Sam Houston-Prairie View A&M game. Parents/Family Weekend was rescheduled for November 15 when the Kats fell in overtime to Southeastern Louisiana 30-27.
When there hasn't been a real hurricane, Parents/Family Weekend usually has provided an offensive storm on the field.
The average amount of points scored in the 25 previous events has been 45.5. Nine times, Sam Houston and the Bearkats' opponent have combined to score more than 50 points. Last year's Bearkat Family Weekend game was no exception as the Kats rallied for a 48-45 victory over North Dakota State

The 6 p.m. event at Bowers Stadium will feature a special guest appearance by the Houston Texans cheerleaders, a postgame fireworks extravaganza presented by Magic in the Sky of San Antonio, a fly-over by U.S. Army helicopters, the Bearkat band's march from the SHSU Mall to the biggest Bearkat Alley tailgate ever and the "Hillcrest Ford Heroes" halftime salute to military veterans and Walker County police and fire department emergency service personnel.
Each student or employee, with a valid BearkatOne card number, may pick up one (1) general admission ticket on the west side of Bowers Stadium for themselves.There is a limit of 500 tickets that are distributed on "The Mall" Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until supplies last, whichever comes first. All students and employees who have not picked up an advance ticket must enter through the north gate and have access to the east grandstand next to the SHSU band. Gates open 90 minutes before kickoff.
Tickets for all Bearkat home football games are onsale online now at www.gobearkats.com/tickets or at the Sam Houston athletic ticket office located in the Ron Mafrige Field House in the south end zone of Bowers Stadium. Ticket office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The ticket office telephone number is 936 294-1729.
On game day Saturday, the Bowers Stadium ticket office on the west (press box) side of the stadium will open at 4:30 p.m.
