Pence and the Bearkat defense posted two shutouts as Sam Houston handed North Texas its first loss of the season in a 1-0 match Friday night then blanked Texas Southern 2-0 Sunday afternoon.
Friday's game was played on a wet, muddy field after a 25-minute downpour at the start of the game drenched the playing surface. The contest went double overtime with Kirby Zak scoring the game winner in the 105th minute.
The shutouts Friday and Sunday upped Pence's school record career shutout total to 19. The wins were the senior's 28th and 29th career goalkeeper victories, also a Sam Houston mark.
This week's honor marks the sixth time during the Kingwood product's Bearkat career that she has received Southland "Goalkeeper of the Week" honors.
Pence is a two-time Academic All-Southland Conference goalkeeper and was named both to CoSIDA Academic All-Region squad and NSCCAA All-South scholar athlete honor team in 2009. She is biology and chemistry double major with 3.88 overall grade point average.
"Jenny is a tremendous leader and her play in goal has been one of the most consistent features of our team play so far this season," Sam Houston head coach Tom Brown said. "She has made some first class saves this year. We're happy to see her play honored."
Lamar junior Lisa Hance was named Southland offensive player of the week while Stephen F. Austin junior Jordan King was voted defensive player of the week.
The Sam Houston soccer team heads to Mobile, Al., this weekend for a Friday match with South Alabama and a Sunday meeting with Troy at the South Alabama Soccer Classic.
Next home action for Sam Houston will be a match with Baylor at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, at Pritchett Field.
