The academic performance marked the ninth consecutive semester for SHSU varsity sports to post a department GPA above 2.85.
The 3.236 GPA compiled by women's tennis was the highest grade point average among Sam Houston's 17 sports. Other team GPAs above 3.0 were women's golf (3.29), volleyball (3.27), softball (3.12) and bowling (3.07).
The 2.88 department grade point average marks the 30th consecutive semester for the Bearkats to post an overall GPA above 2.5 and the 37th semester in a row above a 2.3 average (every year since the 1992-93 sports season).
The athletic program's GPA is a mark higher than the overall student population at Sam Houston State.
"Give the credit for our academic success to our outstanding student-athletes and our coaching staff who recruit such quality young men and women," Sam Houston director of athletics Bobby Williams said. "We take as much pride in our student-athletes' performances in the class room as their accomplishments in the arena. Each year these young men and women seem to raise the bar for themselves. Chris Thompson and her staff in academics do a great job each year coordinating our student-athletes' efforts in the classroom."
Twenty-three student-athletes produced perfect 4.00 GPAs during the 2010 fall semester.
By teams, those young men and women were: Chris Andreas, Jacob Arrington, Brandon Kimbrel and Paul Spinn (baseball); Lance Pevehouse (men's basketball), Lauren Tippet (women's basketball), Lisa MacAllister (bowling); Timothy Easterling and Travis Watson (football); James Glenn (men's golf); Laura Reynolds and Sarah St. John (women's golf); Lauren Bohlen, Courtney Laskowski and Kym Loving (volleyball); Tricia Mallory (soccer); Anrinette Botha (tennis); Travis Kocurek, Julius Michael and Roger Rueweler (men's track and field) and Kaylee Brazeel, Molly Farrell and Jessica Fisher (women's track and field).
Williams and associate athletic director for student services Chris Thompson announced the academic performances Monday.
