Track rolls at Wichita State in indoor opener

The men's and women's Bearkat squads combined to pick up 24 medals including four first place finished by the men and four by the women.
"It was a solid performance for a first meet," Sam Houston head track and field coach Dave Self said. "We were particularly excited by the performances of some of our newcomers. After 20 weeks of practice this was our first opportunity to see the new kids perform. Several were impressive. This also was a great experience for the team because we ran on the same surface at Wichita that we will see at the Southland Conference indoor championships next month."
Four returning women's letter winners are bringing gold medals home from Wichita.
Jessica Fisher won the 200 meters with a time of 25.41. Monika May placed first in the 400 meters, clocking 58.14 seconds. Sabrina Starr was the winner of the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.67. Christina Webb threw the shot put 45 feet, 1.75 inches for a victory.
Webb also was runner-up in the weight throw with a toss of 51 feet, 5.75 inches.
Other Bearkat women silver medalists were Kristian Austin in the 200 meters (25.57), Lygia Foreman in the 400 meters (58.16) and Ambra McCuin in the long jump (18 feet, 9 inches).
Austin also took third place in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.78 seconds. Other Bearkat women third-place finishers included Sunday Foster in the 200 meters (25.64) and the long jump (18 feet, 1 inch), Amanda Dunlap in the 800 meters (2:22.24) and Alyssa Dooley in the 1,000 meters (3:06.65).
Gold medalists for the Bearkat men included D. J. Hayes in the 400 meters, Roger Rueweler in the 800 meters, Jacob Schultz in the shot put and Jason Russell in the weight throw.
Hayes ran a time of 47.47 seconds, Rueweler posted a mark of 1:59.13, Schultz threw 55 feet, 4.25 inches and Russell's winning mark was 59 feet, 11.25 inches.
Pierre Russell was the runner-up in the 200 meetings with a 22.64 second performances. The Bearkat 4x400 relay team finished as runner-up with a time of 3:19.81 posted by Rodney Jones, Desmond Jones, Jay Newman and Hayes.
Six Bearkat men produced third place finishes including Jarrick Wright in the 60 meter dash (7.01); Jasen Hickman in the 200 meters (22.76), Patrick Krol in the 3,000 meters (8:58.15); Ryan Oakes in the pole vault (15' 5.5") and A. J. Edwards in the long jump (24' 1.75").
