Sam Houston State sophomore forward Britni Martin was named the Southland women's basketball player of the week by vote of the league's sports information directors the conference announced Monday.
The award marks Martin's second of the season, joining Lamar sophomore Kalis Loyd and Central Arkansas sophomore Megan Herbert as the only Southland players with two weekly awards this year.
A native of Conroe, Texas, Martin led the Bearkats in two home wins over Texas State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Playing in 72 of a possible 80 minutes, Martin scored 45 points and hit 10 three-pointers with 14 rebounds and 12 assists.
The win over A&M-Corpus Christi is the first against the Islanders since they joined the Southland in 2006. In the win over Texas State, Sam Houston extended its conference start to 5-0 for just the second time in the school's 24 years in the Southland.
Martin is averaging 16.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. In her two seasons as a Bearkat, Martin has totaled 599 points in 47 games.
