The match marked the first appearances in dual match play or three freshmen. Imke Jagau, Anrinette Botah and Natalie Petaia all won in straight sets at the number one, five and six singles positions, respectively. Jagau and Petaia combined for an 8-2 win at number three singles.

Sophomores Tatyana Postnikova, Nadia Dubyanskaya and Sheridan Currie each won at number two, three and four singles. The two Russians, Postnikova and Dubyanskaya teamed for a victory at number one doubles and Currie and senior Cally Woerner won at number two doubles.

"We're off to a 1-0 start and I'm happy with how hard the girls played today," Sam Houston head coach Jim Giachino said. "With all the problems some of the girls had with opportunities to practice during the break and the bad weather days we had last week, we were a little scratchy at times during the match. But this was a good confidence builder for the squad and a great way to start the year."

Weather permitting, Sam Houston is scheduled to face Abilene Christian in a non-conference dual match at the SHSU McAdams Tennis Center Tuesday afternoon.
