Clavell named player of the week

Sam Houston State forward Gilberto Clavell has been named the Southland Conference men's basketball player of the week, the league office announced Monday.
The honor marks the second time this season and the fifth in his two seasons as a Bearkat that the 6-7 senior from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, has been named as Southland player of the week.
Clavell averaged 16.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in the Bearkats' three games last week.
He scored 24 points against Air Force in the Don Haskins Sun Bowl Classic and added 21 at UTEP on Sunday. The Florida Air Academy product connected on 53.3 percent of his shots (16-of-30) and sank 17-of-23 free throws (73.9 percent) in the three games, which also included a win over Western New Mexico.
Clavell's first player of the week honor this season came Nov. 29 after he scored a season-high 29 points in an upset at Colorado State.
In 12 games, Clavell is second in the Southland in scoring, averaging 18.9 points to go along with 7.3 rebounds.
Clavell has scored in double figures 12 times this season and 39 games in his two seasons as a Bearkat. A first-team preseason All-Southland Conference selection, Clavell was the Southland's "Newcomer of the Year" and was one of 10 NCAA Division I men's basketball players from Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas to receive National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District VIII honors.
Sam Houston opens the defense of its Southland Conference championship on Saturday, Jan. 8, with a road game encounter at UTSA. The Bearkats' first Southland home game will be a 7 p.m. tilt with UT-Arlington on Wednesday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.
