Soccer adds new defender

Hailey Shelpuk, a defender from Samford University, has joined the Sam Houston women's soccer team as a transfer in 2011, Bearkat head coach Tom Brown has announced.
The announcement comes two days before national signing day with Coach Brown will announce his 2011 recruiting class of top freshmen players.
Shelpuk was team captain of the D'Feeters 91 club team, helping guide the squad to a first place finish at the 2008 Lake Highlands Classic. She played club soccer for six years.
She was the 2009 team captain and a four-year starter at McKinney Boyd High School, leading her squad to the 2008 Texas Class 4A state championship. She was a National Honor Society member, honor roll student and also lettered in track and field.
At Samford, Shelpuk earned playing time the past two seasons, helping lead her team to the conference tournament championship game.
"We're excited to have Hailey joining our team," Brown said. "She gives us another experienced defender who can play central or wide. She is a very good athlete who has a good touch on the ball."
