The Pan American Games are the second largest multi-sport event in the world behind the summer Olympics. A total of 42 countries participated in the games which feature competition in 36 different events.
The Pan American Games marked the second international appearance for the senior Port-Neches Groves High School product. Johnson also competed in the Thorpe Cup decathlon between U.S.A. and Germany which was held at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California this past August.
"Matt had a great meet in Guadalajara, setting new personal bests in several events as well as posting some very strong marks in the remaining events," SHSU multi-events coach Clint Blinka said. "He was able to finish 10th despite experiencing a 'no height' in the high jump which left him with zero points for that particular event. Matt was also given the opportunity to experience competition with some of the greatest track and field athletes in the world which will help prepare him for his future experience as a world class athlete."
Johnson's cumulative score came out to 6,929 total points.
