Sam Houston was blanked in its first two Southland tilts of 2011 on the road last weekend, falling to Texas State 1-0 and UTSA 2-0. The Bobcats and the Roadrunners both finished among the top four teams in the 2010 league race.
To get back in the race for one of the six spots in the Southland post-season tournament in Conway, Ark., in November the Kats need to turn things around in a hurry. With only two goals in their last five contests, offense will be a key.
Northwestern State brings a 1-1 Southland mark and a 7-5 overall record into the tilt Friday. The Demons opened league action at home last weekend with a 3-1 loss to Southeastern Louisiana and a 2-0 victory over Nicholls.
Sophomore Tricia Mallory is Sam Houston's top scorer this year with six goals while Emily Ednstrom, Jessica Toms and Kayla Anderson each have scored three times.
Meghan Hunter leads Northwestern State with five goals and Yanci Johnson has tallied four.
The Bearkats will be looking for their first victory over the Demons since 2007 when SHSU won 2-1 in Huntsville. Northwestern State won 4-0 in Natchitoches in 2008 and 2-1 at home last year and edged the Kats 1-0 in Huntsville in 2009.
Sam Houston continues the home stand Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Bearkats play host to Central Arkansas. There is no admission charge for Bearkat women's soccer matches at Pritchett Field.
