In the season opener for the Bearkats, Thomas scored 23 points in only 23 minutes of play in a 94-74 win over UT Tyler Sunday afternoon. The junior from Allentown, Pa. (Parkland H.S.), made 10 of 15 shots from the floor (66.7 percent) and added nine rebounds, one block and one steal. Thomas also knocked down 75 percent of her free throw attempts (3 of 4).
Thomas is a preseason second team All-Southland Conference selection who earned co-Most Valuable Players with Britni Martin for Sam Houston State last season. Martin and Thomas both were voted as All-Southland and Academic All-Southland in 2011.
Thomas ranked No. 2 in rebounds (10.3), No. 4 in blocked shots (1.6), No. 8 in scoring (14.6) and No. 14 in field goal percentage in the Southland last season.
Next action for the Bearkats will be the annual "Pack the House" game Friday at 12 noon when more than 3,000 Walker County area school kids will fill Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum for Sam Houston's game with Mary Hardin-Baylor.
