Seventh Place in Delaware

The Sam Houston State women's bowling team rallied after a shaky start to win their final six matches in a row and finish seventh in the overall standings at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawk Classic tournament.
The event was held at Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Delaware. The host University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks are the defending NCAA women's bowling champions and are the nation's No. 1 ranked team. A total of 13 of the 19 teams in the UMES Hawk Classic are in the NCAA top 20 and eight of the top 10 teams in the rankings will be participating.
Sam Houston went 1-3 on Friday in Baker total pin play, losing to No. 12 Delaware State 763-711, o. 18 Valparaiso 760-754 and No. 4 Central Missouri 821-669.
The Bearkats bounced back to win their final match of the day 806-702 over Hampton.
Day two traditional team action started with a pair of losses. The Bearkats fell to No. 1 ranked Maryland-Eastern Shore, the defending NCAA champions 920-881 and to unranked Morgan State 932-851.
The Kats turned things around, finishing Saturday with three wins by defeating Howard 913-746, No. 15 Norfolk State 932-845 and North Carolina A&T 833-776.
The Bearkats outscored their oppents with a total pin average of 176.4 to 168.8.
In bracket best-of-seven bracket play Sunday, Sam Houston won all three matches to finish the tournament in seventh place.
Sam Houston and Monmouth each won three times and tied 172-172 in the sixth, but the Bearkats took the tiebreaker 93-61 for their first win of the day.
The Kats next earned back-to-back 4-2 victories over No. 10 New Jersey City and #12 Delaware State. The performance marked the first time the Bearkats had gone 3-0 in Sunday best-of-seven Baker action in the year and a half history of the program.
Following the trip to Delaware, Sam Houston will complete its 2011 fall schedule by hosting the Kat Klash Bowling Intercollegiate tournament in Huntsville Friday December 2 through Sunday December 4.
