Softball ends tournament 3-2

Lafayette, La. - The Sam Houston softball team completed a successful weekend at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette Classic with a split Sunday afternoon.

The Bearkats run-ruled Prairie View A&M 14-5 then lost 4-1 to the nationally-ranked hosts, the Ragin' Cajuns.

Sam Houston ended the tournament tied with Arkansas with the second best record in the event. Both teams won three of their five games with the Bearkats and Razorbacks splitting in a pair of extra inning battles against one another.

Shortstop Hailey Wiginton and third baseman Shelbi Tucker both were selected to the Classic all-tournament team.

Rounding out the all-tournament team wereKatelyn Den Beste of Prairie View A&M; Tori Mort and Courtney Breault of Arkansas; and Christi Orgeron, Nerissa Myers, Sarah Draheim, Ashley Brignac  and Gabriele Bridges (MVP) all of Louisiana-Lafayette.

Wiginton hit a three-run home run and added another RBI on a sacrifice fly to lead the Bearkats in the victory over Prairie View. Outfielder Alex Survant added a double and first baseman Courtney Flanary went three-for-three at the plate.

Cecilia Gardner, Shelby Lancaster and Courtney Schoemann all saw action in the pitching circle with Lancaster picking up her first collegiate victory.

In the final game of the tournament, Louisiana-Lafayette clinched the Classic championship by earning their fifth victory in a row as Cajun pitcher Ashley Brignac limited Sam Houston to two hits and struck out seven Bearkats.

Tucker and Kim Damian produced the Kats' two hits. Damian's single resulted in SHSU's only run as the first baseman reached second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a ground out by Tayler Gray.

Tomi Garrison was the losing pitcher for Sam Houston. Tucker ended the tournament going 7-for-14 at the plate.

The Sam Houston softball team opens its home schedule with 4 p.m. encounters Tuesday and Wednesday at the Bearkat Complex against Texas Southern and Houston Baptist, respectively.
