Huntsville - First baseman Kim Damian went 4-for-7 with three RBIs to lead Sam Houston as the Bearkats split a non-conference softball doubleheader with Houston Baptist Tuesday night.
The Huskies run-ruled the Bearkats 9-1 in the first game, but SHSU bounced back for a 9-5 victory in the nightcap.
Houston Baptist (2-3) scored five of their nine runs on three run homes in the first game. Third baseman Kaitlin Southern and center fielder Callie Herrington hit two-run homers in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively and shortstop Mollye Mlcak had a solo shot in the second frame.
Back-to-back doubles by Damian and catcher Sarah Allison hit back-to-back doubles in the fourth inning to account for the Bearkats' lone run.
Sam Houston took advantage of three HBU errors in the first two innings to build a 9-2 advantage. Two-run singles by Allison and third baseman Shelbi Tucker powered the Kats to the lead.
Jammie Weidert (2-0) was the winning pitcher for HBU in the first game, giving up only five hits in six innings and striking out seven Bearkats. Shelby Lancaster (0-1) took the loss.
Courtney Schoenemann picked up her first pitching win as a Bearkat, spreading eight hits over four and a third innings. Tomi Garrison picked up the save in relief.
Sam Houston State (5-3) heads to New Mexico State for their second softball tournament of the young season Friday through Sunday.
