Waco - Senior shortstop Hailey Wiginton provided the Bearkats their only tally with a third-inning solo home run as the University of Houston run-ruled Sam Houston 9-1 in six innings in SHSU's first game Friday at the Baylor Softball Invitational.
In theKats' second outing of the tournament, Baylor blanked SHSU 6-0.
Wiginton's home run was the only hit Cougar right-hander Amanda Crabtree allowed as she struck out 11 Bearkats in Houston's Friday afternoon win. Melissa Gregson led a UH line-up that totaled 12 hits as the left fielder went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a double.
Freshman Cecilia Castillo took the loss after starting for Sam Houston and pitching four and two thirds innings. Courtney Schoenemann completed the game in relief. Houston upped its mark to 10-2 for the year with the win.
Baylor defeated the Kats 6-0 in SHSU's second contest Friday. Right-hander Whitney Canion limited Sam Houston to three hits, striking out two in the shutout.
Kim Damian singled in both the first and fifth innings and Calli Wood hit safely in the fifth to account for the Bearkats' hits.
Kim Shelton went 3-for-4 at the plate including a pair of RBIs to lead Baylor.
Saturday the Bearkats take on Central Arkansas at 10 a.m. Action concludes in the tournament Sunday as Sam Houston meets Louisiana-Monroe at 9 a.m. and Central Arkansas at 11 a.m.
