After opening Southland action with a 4-3 victory over UTA last Friday, the Kats dropped games to the Mavericks by 8-4 and 4-2 margins Saturday and Sunday, then fell to Houston 9-3 Tuesday. Sam Houston stands 12-4 for the year. Texas State enters the weekend with a 12-4 overall record and 3-0 mark in the Southland Conference
The Bobcats and Bearkats will begin the set on Friday with a 6:30 p.m. game before playing on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Sam Houston has four starters batting above .300 this year with Ryan Mooney leading the team with a .403 batting mean and Greg Olson, Chris Andreas and Mark Hudson hitting .396, .354 and .339, respectively.
The Bobcats will send junior Carson Smith (2-1, 2.18 ERA) to the mound on Friday and junior Mitchell Pitts (2-0, 5.56) on Saturday. The team's Sunday starter has yet to be determined.
The Bearkats will start three seniors over the course of the weekend, beginning with Matt Shelton (3-0, 2.59) on Friday before sending Brent Powers (2-1, 2.31) to the mound on Saturday and Brandon Kimbrel (1-0, 2.45) on Sunday.
The all-time series between Texas State and Sam Houston State has been tightly contested with the Bobcats holding a narrow 47-41 advantage. Over the past 10 games, each team has won five times.
The Bobcats took two of three from Sam Houston in Huntsville in last year's series. Texas State won 12-5 and 9-8 before the Kats came back for a 10-8 win in the final game.
