But exactly who the Bearkats will play and what their seed is will be decided in Saturday's final round of regular season games. The SHSU women take on Texas State at 4 p.m. at Strahan Coliseum Saturday. The game will be broadcast live on KHVL 1490 AM.
With one game remaining in the regular season schedule, the Bearkat women stand tied for first in Southland West Division.
At 16-13 with one regular season games to go, Sam Houston has nailed down its first above .500 year since the 1995-96 Bearkat squad went 18-10. The 1996 Kat women finished third in the Southland with a 13-5 league record, SHSU's highest women's Southland standing ever.
In 24 years at the NCAA Division I level, SHSU has posted winning season marks only twice before - 18-10 in 1996 and 18-9 in 1988. Sam Houston State University head coach Brenda Welch-Nichols was the leading scorer for the 1988 squad.
The 2011 Sam Houston women's basketball season has been a year for remarkable accomplishments.
The Bearkats opened non-conference play with a 6-3 record, the best start to an SHSU women's season since the 1991 squad opened 6-3.
In Southland Conference action, Sam Houston jumped out to a 5-0 start, tying the 1998 squad that also started 5-0 for best start in the university's 24 years in the league.
The team's 10-5 Southland mark is the best for a Kat women's team since the 2000 squad went 11-7 to finish fourth in the conference.
Four Bearkats rank high in Southland Conference statistics categories. Britni Martin is the league's second-leading scorer with 16.1 points per game. Sequeena Thomas ranks 10th in scoring (13.8) and second in rebounds (9.5). Chanice Smith is 18th in scoring (11.4 points per game). Khamra Echols stands third in the Southland in assists (4.0).
The Bobcats hold a narrow 35-34 edge in the all-time series between the Kats and the Cats. Sam Houston has won in the pair's last five meetings. Sam Houston is 12-19 against the Bobcats in San Marcos.
Britni Martin scored 26 points and Sequeena Thomas added 17 and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead Sam Houston to an 82-67 Svictory at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum January 19 in the pair's first meeting this season.. The victory put Sam Houston at 4-0 for only the second time in the Bearkats' 24 years in the Southland. SHSU started with four straight league wins previously in 1998.
Sam Houston never trailed, leading 42-26 at halftime and by as many as 21 points in the second half. The Bearkats (10-8 overall) finished the first half on a 17-6 run to open up a 16-point lead.
