The pair lead Sam Houston to only it's third winning record in the Bearkats' 24 years of NCAA Division I women's basketball. The Kat women rolled up a 17-13 season mark and a 11-5 record in Southland action. The 2011 team equaled SHSU's highest league overall finish ever (3rd place) and tied for the Southland West Division championship
Martin a native of Conroe, Texas, is a business major with a 3.35 GPA. Thomas, a native of Allentown, Pa., carries a 3.21 GPA in mass communications.
The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic advisors from each Southland Conference university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to qualify for the all-academic squad.
Martin earned All-Southland Conference first team honors in 2011. She ranked among top 10 in the Southland in six statistical categories including No. 4 scoring (15.9), No. 7 assists (3.7), No. 9 steals (2.0), No. 2 3-point field goals (2.9), No. 6 3-point fg pct. (.355) and No. 5 assist/turnover ratio (1.3). She set aBearkat season record with 89 three point baskets in 2011. After only two seasons of play at SHSU, Martin ranks No. 16 in all-time Sam Houston scoring.
Thomas was an All-Southland Conference second team selection in 2011. She ranked among top 10 in the Southland in six statistical categories including No. 8 scoring (15.9), No. 2 rebounds (10.3) and No. 4 blocks (1.6).
Thomas was the second leading scorer and leading rebounder for the Bearkats and set Bearkat season record with 14 double doubles in 2011 (including seven straight to end the season).
